UPI Transaction Limit 2023: Of 105 Banks Along With SBI and HDFC

×

Table of Content

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is a system that allows several bank accounts to operate via a  single mobile application. As a result, banking features, fund transfer & vendor payments can take place via a single application. It allows bank to bank collection requests and payment mandates very conveniently.

The UPI was launched as a pilot project with 21 banks on 11th April 2016 by RBI, Dr Raghuram Rajan.

UPI employs pre-existing systems, such as Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) and Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AEPS), to enable receipt and payments across different bank accounts.

Once a  recipient is fixed, the UPI enables money to be delivered without using credit or debit cards, net banking, or account details. However, understanding the UPI payment limit is essential, which we will cover in this article.

Main Features of UPI

  • Money transfer through mobile which can take place 24*7.
  • Single application for login into several bank accounts.
  • 2 Factor Authentication for higher safety.
  • Bill Sharing with friends.
  • No more “Cash on Delivery” problem, running to an ATM or rendering exact change.

Participants in UPI

  • Payer PSP (Payment Service Provider)
  • Payee PSP
  • Remitter Bank
  • Beneficiary Bank
  • NPCI
  • Bank Account holders
  • Merchants

Note: PSP or Payment Service Provider is a technology service within the UPI system. It acts on behalf of the banks for making or receiving payment.

General UPI Limit

The NPCI has set a UPI transaction limit. Presently, the UPI transaction limit per day is Rs 1 Lakh. Also, the maximum number of UPI transactions is twenty per day. The upper limit varies from bank to bank. As a result, the upper limit could be between ten thousand to one lacs. It is important to note that the limit may change from time to time.

Potential Change in Transaction Limits

According to a circular released by the NPCI in March 2020,  "the transaction limit for payments through Unified Payments Interface (UPI) at stores run by ‘verified merchants’ will be increased to Rs.2 lakh from next fiscal year. This move is to boost digital payment players such as PhonePe, Google Pay, etc. However, this change will not apply to peer-to-peer fund transfers.

Different banks insert an extra level of security in the UPI system. And in view to further strengthen the UPI ecosystem, specific changes are made to the transaction processes. Like in the case of HDFC bank, as per their website, "New UPI users or users who have changed their device/sim card/mobile number can transact only upto Rs 5,000/- for the first 24 hours on Android phone & 72 hours for iPhone users."

Also, "the limit of 10 transactions is only applicable for fund transfer and doesn't include Bill pay transactions and merchant transactions."

UPI AutoPay

NPCI has come up with UPI AutoPay for regular payments. With this new facility, clients can now enable recurring e-mandate using any UPI application for recurring expenses such as telephone bills, Netflix, OTT charges, WIFI charges, Electricity charges, EMI bills. The list of banks and partners as of date is shown below:

UPI Limit for BHIM app

A customer can transfer upto Rs 40,000 per transaction and a maximum of Rs 40,000 per day for one bank account. This UPI transfer limit is based on per bank account linked with BHIM. The State Bank of India launched its own mobile payments app named BHIM SBI Pay. It can be used by SBI account holders as well as customers of other UPI-enabled banks. The transfer of funds is carried out through a Virtual Payment Address (VPA).

Conclusion

UPI has made digital payments highly convenient and easy. You don't have to remember your or anyone else’s bank account number. All you have to do is enter the virtual payment address or the mobile number of the recipient. This safe and secure method has emerged as one of the popular ways to send and receive cash online.

Often the customer is not well informed about the UPI transaction limit. As a result, they may encounter transaction failure while executing the transaction. This may lead to delay in payments and also loss of creditworthiness. For example, not being able to pay credit card bills on time due to UPI transaction failure.  You'll end up paying a considerable amount of fines and an extra amount on account of such lapse.

However, you can execute money transfers faster than pre-existing NEFT and RTGS features without any fee. The UPI enabled bank transactions are one of a kind in the world, due to which it is crucial to know about the UPI limit. Other countries are yet to incorporate it into their banking system. Also, as a matter of pride, this system is developed in India itself.
