A trademark is a sign used to distinguish the goods or services of one enterprise from those of other enterprises. A trademark may be a word, phrase, logo, picture, or other sign. A trademark owner may use it to prevent others from using a similar sign, especially if the use would likely confuse.
Did you know? There is no limit to the number of classes a trademark owner can register under a single Multi-class trademark application. The trademark owner/company can mention all the classes in the same application (Form TM-A) for multiclass trademark registration.
What are Trademark Classifications?
There are 45 trademark registration classes, divided into two categories: product classes and service classes. Product classes include all physical goods, while service classes include all services. The classes are numbered 1-34 for products and 35-45 for services that are produced by the ICGS (International Certification of Goods and Services), sometimes referred to as the "NICE Classification".
Some examples of product classes are:
-Class 1: Chemicals
-Class 2: Paints
-Class 3: Cosmetics
-Class 4: Cleaning agents
-Class 5: Pharmaceuticals
Some examples of service classes are:
-Class 35: Advertising
-Class 36: Insurance
-Class 37: Construction
-Class 38: Telecommunications
-Class 39: Transport
-Class 40: Treatment of materials
The need for classification arises because different products and services require different levels of protection. For example, pharmaceuticals are more likely to be counterfeited than cosmetics, so they would require a higher level of protection. Classifying trademarks makes it easier for the Trademark Office to determine the appropriate level of protection for each trademark.

Conclusion
Trademarks are a great way to set your product and business apart from others and establish yourself as the origin of your product. If your product is a chemical, there is a good chance it will fall under the class 1 trademark. That means the applicant must mention the correct trademark class while applying for Trademark Registration. In case of an incorrect class, the registration process will start again from the zero level.
