The introduction and implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in 2017 was met with widespread uncertainty. Businesses and individuals who provide goods or services have since then been required to begin the process of GST registration.

Do You Need to Carry Out Online GST Registration?

- Valid Personal Account Number (PAN)
- Proof of constitution of business or certificate of incorporation

The Procedure Of GST Registration for Normal Taxpayers
Step 1: Head over to the GST website.
Step 2: Click on Services, go to Registration, and click on New Registration option.
Step 3: The application form for GST registration will be displayed.
Fill out the required details in Part A of the form and hit “Proceed.”
Step 4: Enter the OTP you receive on your mobile and your email address.
Step 5: When you verify the application, Part A of the online GST registration form is done.
The system then automatically generates and displays a Temporary Reference Number (TRN).
This TRN, which is needed to complete GST registration, is valid for only 15 days.
Step 6: This step signifies Part B of the form. You can open Part B of the GST registration form by hitting the “My Saved Applications” tab. Enter the given TRN and its associated captcha text, as shown on the screen.
Step 7: Once you hit “Proceed,” the verification page will be displayed. Enter the OTP you receive on your registered mobile number and email address.
Step 8: The My Saved Applications page is then displayed. Under the Action column, select the Edit icon.
Step 9: The GST registration form with the following tabs will be shown. You will need to select each tab and submit the relevant details. The following constitute the critical tabs in the application form for GST registration:

Step 10: After you successfully verify your application for the GST registration, you will receive an acknowledgment within 15 minutes on your registered email ID and mobile number.

How to Check the GST Registration Status?
Step 1: Visit the online GST Portal.
Step 2: Click on Services, go to Registration, and select Track Application Status.
Step 3: Select the ARN button and enter the ARN received on your e-mail address after you submitted the registration application under GST. Type the captcha and click on “Search” to view the GST application status.
You can expect one of the following GST registration statuses to be displayed:
- Provisional: Provisional GST ID issued, but registration not yet completed.
- Pending for Verification: Application for registering under GST submitted, but not yet approved.
- Validation Against Error: PAN details provided do not match the IT Department PAN records.
- Migrated: GST migration completed successfully.
- Canceled: GST registration canceled.
What Happens if you Do Not Complete GST Registration?
- Those who fail to register for a GST certificate will have to pay a penalty equal to 10% of the tax amount or Rs. 10,000, whichever is greater.
- If the failure to register for a GST certificate is found to be a deliberate attempt at fraud, the penalty can be as high as 100% of the tax amount to be paid.
How To Download GST Certificate?
Taxpayers who have completed GST registration can download the GST certificate by following these steps.
Step 1: Visit the online GST portal and log in.
Step 2: Click on the Services menu, select User Services, and hit the View/Download Certificates option.
Step 3: You can expect to see a form REG-06 for the GST Certificate. You can download the GST certificate by clicking on the download option.
The GST Certificate that includes the GST Identification Number (GSTIN) and critical details like the registered business name, address, and date of registration of the business are displayed.
