Types of GST Filing Return Forms

When paying GST online, there are certain forms to fill and submit. This return system will contain simplified return forms, for ease of filing and submission across taxpayers registered under GST.

There are 13 types of GST Return forms listed below along with their particulars and frequency of use.

GSTR-1

Details of outward supplies of goods and services, every month.

GSTR-2

Details of inward supplies of goods and services affected, every month.

GSTR-3

Monthly returns, in case of finalizing details of outward and inward supplies along with the payment of tax.

GSTR-3B

Simple returns where the summary of outward supplies along with Input Tax Credit is declared and payment of tax is affected by the taxpayer, every month.

GSTR-4

For all taxpayers registered under the Composition Scheme, levied every quarter.

GSTR-5

Returns for a non-resident or foreign taxpayer, every month.

GSTR-6

Returns for an input service distributor, every month.

GSTR-7

Returns for authorities deducting TDS (Tax Deducted at Source), every month.

GSTR-8

Details of supplies affected through the e-commerce operator and the amount of tax collected, every month.

When Filing GST Returns

Once the payment is processed successfully, the webpage will be directed to an acknowledgement page where the Application Reference Number (ARN) will be displayed.

This 15 digit code is designated to each and every taxpayer who files for GST Returns and can be used to track the status of the returns filed.

For example, the ARN is AA0102154567891.

The first 2 are alphabets. (AA)

The next 2 digits represents the state code. (01)

The next 2 digits represents the month. (02)

The next 2 digits represent the year. (15)

The next 6 digits represent the system generated code. (456789)

And the last number is the check sum digit. (1)

How to Check the Status of GST Returns

There are many different ways to check the status of your GST returns, 3 of them are listed below.

Checking GST Return Status using ARN

The taxpayer will receive an ARN on their registered email address or through an SMS.

  • Open the GST portal (www.gst.gov.in)
  • Enter your credentials and log in.
  • Select ‘services’, then ‘returns’ and then ‘track return status’.
  • Enter the ARN in the required field.
  • And click on search.

Checking GST Returns using status

  • Open the GST portal (www.gst.gov.in)
  • Enter your credentials and log in.
  • Select ‘services’, then ‘returns’ and then ‘track return status’.
  • Choose the ‘status of return’ from the drop-down list.
  • And click on search.

Checking Return Filing Period on the GST Portal

Make sure the taxpayer has access to their GST account before proceeding.

  • Open the GST portal (www.gst.gov.in)
  • Enter your credentials and log in.
  • Select ‘services’, then ‘returns’ and then ‘track return status’.
  • Choose the ‘return filing period’ option.
  • Select the financial year for which the returns have been filed.
  • And click on search.
